GTR Interwiev
The 28th of may we had the utmost pleasure to interview Jartse Tuominen, Doug Blair and Hannu Leiden before their show in the local cultural centre Kino Marylin. It was an incredible honour to had the chance to meet and talk with such excelent musician and great human beings.
Q. Would you like to introduce yourself for our followers ?
A. (Douglas Blair - D.B.) I'm Doug, I'm originally from Connetticut, but I relocated in Turku, Finland, on 2014 to work in a band coaching program. I've been playing in bands since I was 9 so i have a lot to tell to these young people about what NOT to do and why NOT to be in a band. The coaching program has been really fun and through the small net and web of people knowing each other in Finland, probably two or three steps away, I met Jarste, because I saw the poster for his GTR tour in a music store, and since the moment I saw the poster, I wanted to be involved on this GTR tour !
(Hannu Leiden - H.L.) I'm Hannu Leiden, I'm singing in this band and I am the old man
(Jartse Tuominen - J.T.) I'm Jartse Tuominen and I play guitar
Q. What brought you here in Loviisa Town ?
J.T. We played here a while ago and people seemed to like it a lot so they asked us to play here again.
Q. Why don't you tell us something about this GTR project ?
J.T. I founded it in 2005 and I always enlist three guitar players with a different style and everybody plays their own set and then we jam. It fun when we do jam, as one song has two three different ways to play
D.B. It is not really common to have three big guys playing with the same structure, everybody is famous so people expect them to play their own thing. What is really great with GTR is that everybody can swide in especially in the jam and play together, that's what we're going to do tonight (ndr The 28th of may)
J.T. And we were so happy, Doug was the first guitar player from outside Finland
D.B And we hope to take the tour outside of Finland too ! Maybe in Sweden.
Q. Since you are quite experienced musicians, how do you think has changed the music scene both from the side of the musician and the people listening to music ? Does people expect something different ? Is there anything you have noticed?
J.T. Nowadays in Finland most of the people which go to see a band are 50-60 years old. Youngsters prefers watching their own electronic devices, they don't really want to go to shows anymore. But in my opinion that is gonna change.
Q. From a technical point of view, in the 80's the PA system was mainly on stage behind the artist, now it is way more powerful and in front of the people, so before the band. How does it feel ?
H.L. If you have good monitors it is fine, but if you have not, it is not ok.
D.B. Yep, you can't hear anything without good monitors.
J.T. Personally I like to play very close to bass and drums so I can easily hear it from the stage
Q. So in a way it was better in the old days for the bands?
D.B. I know what you mean, but when you hear the room, everybody feels better and plays better: if you're in a room that is nice and bouncy and the PA is loud, you can feel it back on the stage the reflection of it back to you ...
J.T. ....and it is one of the best feelings ever to play in a big stage and the guitar comes back at you and you can here what people hears, not coming from behind you.
D.B. ... and now most rooms are acustically very efficient under that aspect, including tonight's venue.
Q. You already mentioned you might what to bring GTR outside Finland. So in general which is the future for this project and which are your own individual projects and plans ?
D.B. GTR could go abroad ...
J.T... yes it will ! And we're working on a new album. We look forward on 2026 for the next one. And Hannu just came out with a new book
Thank you guys ! It was amazing talking to you, we look forward to the gig !
